Bill Laurance & Michael League: Where You Wish You Were

Taking a leave from Snarky Puppy, leader and bassist Michael League teams up with pianist Bill Laurance for a series of evocative duets that take you on an exotic journey of Africa and The Mediterranean. Laurance sticks to mostly piano and brings in his voice a bit, while League switches around with the oud, fretless guitar, ngoni, fretless baritone electric guitar and a dash of vocals. The two share in the composing skills, with some rich Andalusian moods on ”La Marinada”, a gentle folk dance on “Meeting of the Minds” and West African driplets on “Ngoni Baby”. Laurance does some lovely work on “Where You Wish You Were” and “Saint Esteve”,  and there are some even some American rural folk tones on “Bricks”. Haunting moods take place on “Anthem For A Tiny Nation.” There’s a  pastoral intimacy here, with thoughtful strings being strummed and elegant piano reflections. An embracing Aegean sunset.
