BEFORE BARRY WHITE…Arthur Prysock: Early Years Selected Singles 1946-62

As molasses toned Barry White was to R&B in the disco 1970s, so was Arthur Prysock to jazz and blues in the post WWII years. This two cd, 50 song collection covers the years that Prysock spent with the swinging boogie and blues band led by Buddy Johnson, as well as his own early years as a solo artist.

Johnson’s jump band served as a great frame for Prysock when it focused on blues and ballads such as “My Reverie”, “I Cry” and “Serves Me Right”. They had a couple big hits together like “They All Say I’m The Biggest Fool” and ”Because” with Prysock filling the room. When he went out on his own, Prysock knocked ‘em out with a swooning version of “The Very Thought Of You” and “One More Time” as well as a hip “Wheel Of Fortune”. He brings some dry rub to the KC swinger of “Good Rockin’ Tonight” , hits the blues hard on “I Just Want To Make Love To You” and goes Vegas on “When I Fall In Love”. After Prysock, no one tried to go this low for a generation.
