The sultry swing of Peggy Lee is respectably celebrated by Ann Hampton-Callaway on this tasty album with John Pizzarelli/g, Ted Rosenthal/p-arr, Bob Mann/g, Tim Horner/dr and Martin Wind/b. Some of the songs sound like complete reproductions of Ms. Lee’s tunes, such as the sultry and breathy “Fever” complete with beatnik drums and bass, as well as the noir film mood of “Black Coffee”. Other times Callaway has fun with a soft samba take of “Till There Was You” and the team gets into a Basie mood on the economically swinging “This Is A Very Special Day/It’s A Good Day”. Callaway broods well with some flamenco guitar on “Johnny Guitar” and tells a good story on “The Folks Who Live On The Hill”. An overlooked present day vocalist gives appreciation to an fellow jazzer who didn’t get the jazz accolades she richly deserved.
