****RINGER OF THE WEEK****Jim Snidero: Far Far Away

One of the more overlooked of today’s alto saxists, Jim Snidero has amassed an impressive catalogue since his days with the Akiyoshi-Tabackin Big Band. This most recent album is a brilliant affair, with Snidero bringing in the tensile guitar workings of Kurt Rosenwinkel to join in with Orrin Evans/p, Peter Washington/b and Joe Farnsworth/dr for a collection of mostly originals. The one cover, “It Might As Well Be Spring”, is a fascinating duet between Snidero and Rosenwinkel, making you beg for an entire album of such material in the future.

Snidero is his usual lyrical self as on “Search For Peace” and teams well with the guitarists voicings on the post bop title tune and the nifty “Obsession” that includes some impressive work at the drivers seat by Farnsworth. Rosenwinkel and Washington volley well under the soft brushes of “Infinity”, and the guitarist is wonderfully sinewy on the whimsical “Little Falls”. Another impressive entry in Snidero’s catalogue.
