Soulful post bop is produced by the team of Josh D. Red/tp, Peter Epstein/as, Adam Benjamin/p-key, Hans Halt/b and Andrew Heglund/dr on a tasty mix of originals and coves. Of the latter, Epstein has a gas of a time staggering around the quirky read of Thelonious Monk’s “Bemsha Swing” and the two horns float like cirrus clouds on Charlie Haden’s “Silence”. The team does a nice 5/4 dance to “Hansepts” while Benjamin and Halt lurk around Reed on”Osmosis”. Benjamin’s keys glide over Heglund’s snappy sticks on ”Push” and coaxe a rich pulse around the horns during “Pajaro Dunes”. Heady heads prevail.
