David Bloom & Cliff Colnot: Shadow of a Soul

Alto saxist David Bloom and arranger Cliff Colnot put together a sophisticated samba album that is reminiscent of the warm collaboration between Antonio Jobim and Don Sebesky. There’s a mix of strings as well as warm horns and percussion provided by the likes of Dave Liebman as guest on soprano sax. But it’s the warm harmonies and gentle pulses that win you over here.

The vibe is sleek with percussion from Luis Rosario and Albert Sierra on “For Eddie P” while guitarist Kraig McCreary leads the charge on “Mu Han”. Rob Parton’s flugelhorn glistens on “No“Reruns” with the woodwinds glistening on “The Way I See It”. The team simmers on “Samba” and the reeds flow on the lovely “Beeb’s Dues”. A Brazilian sunset of sounds.
