Will Vinson: Trip Wire

Alto saxist Will Vinson puts out an elastically stretched album with bassist Matt Penman and drummer Eric Harland, with Melissa Aldana bringing in her tenor sax for a couple of tunes. The music is long, languid and lanky, with the rhythm clip clopping out the post bop title track and drifting about looking for a direction with Penman on a deconstructed take of Count Basie’s “Blue and Sentimental”. Vinson’s keyboard support his screeching horn on “Fable, and when Aldana joins in , there is a hovering restlessness that doubles down on “Resting Jazz Face” while “Things” have the reeds flowing around Penman’s inquisitive bass solo. IF these tunes were shoe strings, the shoes would fall off the foot.
