Tenor saxist Matt Carmichael creates folkish atmospheres with his mix of fiddler Charlie Stewart, pianist Fergus McCreadie, bassist Ali Watson and drummer Tom Porter. Stewart’s strings work remarkably well, giving a home spun edge to pieces like “The Far Away Ones” and the galloping “On The Gloaming Shore (part 1)”, with the saxist leading an energetic charge on the second part. Carmichael’s horn is bluesy as it rasps through “Horizon” and warm over Potter’s hand percussion of “Road to the Sea”.
