Joan Beckow: Joan Beckow Legacy Project

If you’re looking for a new voice in Broadway-styled compositions, give an ear to the overlooked Joan Beckow. This two disc set, recorded between December 2021 and February 2022 is a rich collection of tunes from her rich pen. The first of the two discs shows her adept work at musical theatre, with cheerful and modern Tin Pan Alley p iecds like “Once There Was  A Tailor” and “One   Perfect Rose”. The rotating team of vocalists and musicians tell rich stories on “Miracles” and you even get a couple cozy Christmas pieces like the sleigh belled “A Christmas Wish.”

The second disc has Beckow  showing her religious roots, with a lovely “May the Words” and stately “The Woman I’ll Be” embracing recitatives. She’s confident on the Deuteronomic “Sh’ma” and the praising “Psalm 8”. It’s refreshing to hear unabashed references to God in song as on “How Goodly Are Thy Tents” without a hint of irony or superficiality. Deep waters of song.
