Drummer and leader Mark Guiliana creates a moody and impressionistic album, adding some programming, synths and percussion along with bassist Chris Morrisey, pianist Shai Maestro (who also doubles on various keys) and tenor saxist Jason Rigby who adds clarinets and flutes. There are a couple traditional post bop pieces like the rocking “The Most Important Question”, introduced by Morrisey’s finger work, and the grooved “Under The Influence”, while a couple other pieces such as “The Courage to be Free” and the title tune, have an Eno-ambient electronic feel. The team lays down a funky groove for the wind chiming “Continuation”, with Morrisey and Maestro giving stately conversations on “Practicing Silence” with deep reeds suppled by Rigby on the palpable “The Courage to be Free” and genteel “A Path To Bliss”. A thick brush for water colors.
