Leave it to a reed man to give a tribute to various styles of drumming. Composer, bass clarinetist and tenor saxist Jeremy Rose brings in drummers Simon Barker and Chloe Kim team up with Ben Carey/synth, Jacques Emery/b, Hilary Geddes/g, Novak Manojlovic/p-key and Thomas Avgenicos/tp for a National Geographic tour of drums. There are some beats along with laconic horns on a “Nefertiti”-ish “Chant 12 For Pacific Islands” while Avgenicos sustains long muted tones on the soft “Mirage Returns” and Rose hovers above the restless underworld of “Hold Tight”. The drums and chants get busy on “Currents and Tides” while the tribal beats brood with bass clarinet on “Road to Body”. There’s a military snap to “Interlude” and a choppy bop on “The Trace” with cymbals caressing electronic noodles for “Here Again”. The natives are restless tonight.
