David Blake: Fun House

Richly toned guitarist David Blake creates a sleek front line with soft trumpeter Thad Bailey-Mai along with a rhythm section of Brad Turner/p, Conrad Good/b and Bernie Arai/dr on this collection of post-modern originals and a standard. The latter is a sonata’d solo read by Blake of “The Single Petal of A Rose” which floats like a cirrus cloud, while he also gives some rococo introductions to the floating “Where’s There”. Bailey-Mai does some nice unison lines with the leader on the tricky “Jon, No J on” and the blueish cascade of “Devil Stick”. Arai sizzles with Turner on ”Bernie Does It” and swings with the guitarist for “Flowers For Kenny”. The team cooks most brightly for “Fun House” and is prettiest with Turner’s line on  “Play Dead”. Swinging grey matter.
