Tenor sax man Jimmy Carpenter reminds me of 50s and 60s R&Ber King Curtis, with his big sound grooving through vintage juke box tunes of that period. Along with Mike Zitog, John Gros/p-B3, Casandra Faulconer/dr and Wayne Maureau/dr, Carpenter blows and sings with a blue-eyed soul on the Crescent City grooved “Something You God”, the totally fun shuffler “Barefootin’” a Dr. John-ish “Travellin’ Mood” and the calypso’d “Cry TO Me”. Carpenter blows a mean fog on “I Hear You Knocking” and swamps with Gros’ Hammond on “Bring It On Home To Me”. As a tenor player myself, I’d give anything to sound like this. Are lessons available?
