Sax player Domi Luna joins up to form a duet with drummer JD Beck and a rotating team of guests including jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, pianist Herbie Hancock, rappers Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, hip hoppers Thundercat and soulful Mac DeMarco. Obviously with a lineup like that, you’re going to get a wide girth of sounds, even including foul mouthed lyrics, which as I’ve said before, “people only use foul language when they’ve run out of ideas”. Jazz that needs “Parental Advisory” statements?!?
On the jazzy side, Rosenwinkel sears through a hip fusion “Whoa” and Hancock veers through a sleek bass line on “Moon”. Dogg gives romantic rap to “Pilot” , De Maraco gives an In A Silent Way feel to “Two Shrimps” with more rap on “Take A Chance”. Synthy hop pop takes place on “Not Tight” and the soulful read of “Smile” and “Space Mountain”, making you wonder what the bid deal is with these two artists.
