Advanced thinking trumpeter Dave Douglas brings together a loose fitting team of Jon Irabagon/reeds, Matt Mitchell/p, Rudy Royston/dr and Linda May Han Oh/b for a collection of originals that could easily have come from the pen of early Ornette Coleman. Irabagon’s bright alto teams with Douglas for splaying themes like “Deceitful Tongues” while their unison lines rise and fall on “Lift Up My Eyes” and the stair-stepping “Mouths Full Of Joy”. Yes, the titles are referring to various Psalms in the Bible, but the canon is definitely Coleman on the bopping “A Fowler’s Snare” or the scattering “Never Let Me Go”.
