You get a lot of jazz history on this album with bassist Eddie Gomez, bari man Ronnie Cuber and iconic drummer Steve Gadd joining in with Bruno Muller/g and Bobby Sparks-Simon Oslender/p-key teamed up with the WDR Big Band conducted by Michael Abene. The focus is on shuffling R&B funk with a pint of soul, and it works well with Gadd directing traffic throughout. He drives like Walter Brennan on Red River on “I Can’t Turn You Loose’ and shuffles a deep rivulet for “Watching The River Flow” with gritty solos by Cuber, Muller and Gomez. The charts are crisp for “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” and all out boogaloo-ing for “Way Back Home”. Gomez and Cuber are luminous on the reedy “Che Ore So” and the team gets on the war path for the tribal take of “Them Changes”. Where’s the can of Afro Sheen?
