Nothing like a vintage Blue Note styled session to put some joy back into your life. Bassist Neil Swainson puts together the classic hard bop combo of tenor sax (Kelly Jefferson), trumpet (Brad Turner), piano (Renee Rosnes) and Lewis Nash (dr) for a snappy session of originals. Nash and Rosnes surely know their way around the Jazz Messenger block, and sizzle with Swainson on “Silver Mine”, lurk around the corner on the mellow “Late Afternoon” for the leader to get a workout , and are nimble on the deft “Cascades”. Turner is in the Dorham/Mitchell sweet tradition on the mellow “Fools Gold” and Jefferson is Joe Henderson bluesy for “Fell Among Thieves”. Even the cover has that Francis Wolff look to it. So retro that it’s progressive!
