Joy Lapps: Girl In The Yard

Joy Lapps brings sounds from her Antiguan and Barudan heritage, playing the steel pan drums in a variety of settings on this tasty treat of tones. She’s teamed with a core of Jeremy Ledbetter/key,Rob Christian/ts, Michael Shand/p, Elmer Ferrer/g, Andrew Stewart/b and various guests, including Elizabeth Rodriguez for a bold and gypsy’d “Serena” and Marcus Ali for a festive wooden flute on “Juliet Blooms (Reprise)”. The Caribbean feel is in street mood on the smooth “Lulu’s Dream” and thoughtful on the dreamy “Eyes Of Ameralys” with some assertive Afro Cuban grooves on “Juliet Blumes”. There’s a fusion “Granny’s Pan” that is reminiscent of vintage Weather Report, and a samba’d “Morning Sunrise” that glistens. Multi-colored joys and beats.
