Vocalist John Minnock has a relaxed and avuncular deliver on this casual-cool collection of standards. Backed by Dave Liebman/ss, Mathis Picard-Sean Mason/p, Mark Lewandowski-Carlos Mena/b and Pablo Eluchans/dr, he lets you feel the power of each lyric, soft and cozy on the title tune, and telling a story with Picard’s sauntering ivories on “He Was Brazilian”. He has a loose and languid feel with Liebman’s soprano and soulful keys on “Angel Eyes” while showing his modal chops on the elastic “Cape’s End”, even going wordless on an extemporaneous read of Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage”. His vibrato pleads on the desolate “You Don’t Know What Love Is” while he’s intimate on “Everything Reminds Me Of You”. A voice that’s comfortable in its own skin.
