SOUNDS FROM HEE HAW…The Hagers: The Complete Capitol Albums

Believe it or not, one of the longest-running TV shows was Hee Haw, which first ran on CBS from 1969-71, then went into syndication from 71-93 and then on TNN from 96-97. It popularized many artists such as Buck Owens and Roy Clark, as well as being the showcase for The Hagers, identical twins Jim Henry and John William, who mixed gospel pop and country. This single disc includes all three albums that they recorded on Capitol Records, reflecting a time when country could be clean and wide ranging.

The three lps, The Hagers, Two Hagers are Better Than One and Motherhood, Apple Pie & The Flag have the band starting out like a smoothed out version of  Glen Campbell as on “Tracks (Running Through The City” while displaying nice harmonies throughout as on “Loneliness Without You” on the first release. Voices like Chad and Jeremy on “Silver Wings” or Elvisish on “Gamblin’ Man” mix with two steppers on “I’m Jessie James” while ‘message’ songs capture the times as on “Flowers Need Sun, Too”. There’s some nice bluegrass on the final album’s title piece, and the boys go honky tonkin’ on “Ft. Worth I Love You”. Fit for Disney’s Country Jamboree.
