Shabaka: Afrikan Culture

Along with Blue Note Records, Impulse! is now putting out material dedicated to jazz roots, namely Africa. This album is from UK born, Barbados bred reedist Shabaka Hutchings, with Eight songs on this album, all concise between 1-5 minutes , filled with atmospheres. There are wind chimes and reflective mixtures of flute and bass clarinet on pieces like “Black Meditation” while “Ital Is Vital” seems to include the West African kora with breathy and rhythmic flute to a breezy dance. Chirps and kalimba combine for “The Dimensions of Subtle Awareness” and vocal chants support breathy flutes on “Rebirth”. The album is more suited for reflective gazes into the sky than for sitting in the concert hall, but that is what travelogues are for, aren’t they?
