Giving a tip of the cap to George Gershwin in the clever reworked title, UK trombonist John Aram brings together artists from both side of the Pond for an exciting ensemble that tackles modern musings in timeless fashion.
Aram brings all stars such as vibist Joe Locke and woodwinder/composer Tim Garland into the fold, as well as the astute selection of sandy-voiced Amy Keys, who is passionate around Rob Luft’s echoey guitar on “We’ve Got A Future” and glowing like a beacon around the velvety horns on the wondrous “This Is Just To Say”.
The horn section is bright, optimistic and cheerful, galloping around Locke’s vibes as drummer Graeme Blevins coaxes the team along the 5/4 dance of the title tune. Garland’s bass clarinet broods with Locke and the lovely woodwinds on “Black Elk” while his extroverted tenor gallops around the obstacle course of the exciting “Blues For Little Joe”. The sections punch like Floyd Mayweather as Locke and Garland veer around the jabs on “Ambleside Nights” and trumpeter Tom Walsh gives a cantoral pleading around the elegiac textures of “Little Psalm”. The sparks fly brightly on every piece, with the music sounding both modern and timeless. Any tours on the horizon? Fascinating rhythms!
