Drummer and composer Henry Godfrey leads a collection of large ensemble tributes with a collection of rich charts and vivid solos. Pianist Rowan Barcham gives a dark chorded salute along with guitarist Pritesh Walia on the bright “For McCoy” while “Mad Max” includes sweet horn work by Eli Block” and Nicholas Suchecki’s baritone on the big sounding “Mad Max”. The sections are nimble around the leader’s brush work on the wild ride of “Hot Water” and the percussion sizzles as the muted horns vie with the angular saxes on the outside/in match of “We’ll Get There”. The timbales percolate around Anna Abondolo’s bass on the dreamy “Forgetting What Will Never Be” and leader Godfrey guides the band with deft sticks throughout. A chart buster.
