Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad: Katalyst JID013

The reverse-psychologists Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad mix urban hip hop tones to vintage jazz ideas on their latest addition to the Jazz is Dead catalogue. The sure know how to dig a groove, with “The Avenue” having bass and drums as a shiny shovel. There’s some pretty soul cymbals with keys on “Daybreak” and swirling tones for “Corridors”  while even the cowbell comes back on the percussive “Juneteenth”. Rocking synth gets funky on “Dogon Cypher” and the most mainstream thing here is the acoustic piano on “Reflections”. An olive branch of songs to rappers looking for something new.
