Kansas City bred guitarist John Stein is one of the undiscovered mainstream gems around. At 72, he’s amassed an impressive catalogue, from which this two disc anthology is comprised. He’s got clean and swinging lines in the Ellis, Hall, Montgomery tradition. He’s captured here in small group settings, even delivering a gorgeous “Modhinha” in duet form with bssist Dave Zinno, and a soft teaming with vocalist Ron Gill on “Weaver Of Dreams”. He digs in well with David Newman on flute on a Hammond humming “Hotcakes”, is melodic in a quartet setting with pianist Larry Goldings on “Moonlight In Vermont” and is bohemian with accordionist Evan Harlan during “Le Causse du Quercy”. You’ll never get tired of listening to this guy, and this introduction will make you scour for more.
