John Yao’s Tricerators: Off Kilter

Trombonist John Yao leads a front line of BillY Drewes/ss-as and Jon Irabagon/ts-sos gliding over a pianoless rhythm team of Robert Sabin/b and Mark Ferber/dr through a collection of originals. The mood is reminiscent of mid period Charles Mingus, loose, swinging and sometimes chaotic. Yao sways through “Crosstalk” and teams with Drewes’ soprano for a intuitive “Below The High Rise”. There are rich textures from the horns on “Unfiltered” and the fragrant “Quietly”, but they are also able to flail and scatter as on “Off-Kilter”. Not quite cohesive, not quite abstract.
