Big toned trumpeter Bill Ortiz mixes jazz and funk with a team of Matt Clark/p-key, Marcus Shelby/b, Dennis Chambers/dr, John Santos/perc and Azar Lawrence/ts along with some cameo guests for a collection of tunes that include compositions by giants like Eddie Henderson and Wayne Shorter. The feel is a wide open mix of danceable pieces sch as the rocking “Sunburst” supported by Shelby’s nasty bass line, and “Okonkole y Trompa” as the tone and grit of Jaco Pastorius is embodied by the tone and groove. There’s some sizzling and picante salsa with vocals and horns on ”Ain’t No Need In Crying” and the smoldering cigar of “Fusion/Noche Cubana” with some exotic percussion adding to Ortiz’s seductively muted horn. Last but not least is a meditative “My Lord and Master” with Ortiz flickering like a church candle, but for the most part the scene is set for a disco ball to glisten.
