Bulgarian-American pianist Milen Kirov brings in a mix of classical, jazz and home country themes on this dee and probing solo album. His fingers mix rhapsody and drama for “Bulgarian Stride” while displaying a hip sense of swing on “Back to Bulgaria”. A delicate use a space and soft dynamics are evident on pieces like “Pharos”, the eerie and lurking “Tonus Peregrinus” and the dot and dashes of “Intermezzo III Spatium”. He has some fun with the piano strings for “Thracian Blues” and playfully pokes them on “Time”. A hint of Satie impressionism is evident on the inquisitive “Intermezzo II” and “Intermezzo I Raindrops” while clear and conversant on “Take 7”. Mediterranean musings.
