Vocalist Jesse Palter teams up with Michael Jellick/p-key, Ben Williams/b and Gregory Hutchinson/dr for a collection of impressive originals and clever covers. Her own material is a mix of jazz and Broadway, having fun on a Disneyish “Thought It Through” and clear on the uptown “Happiness”. She has a dash of Eartha Kitt sass on “I Wanna Keep You Forever” while growling out a climax to The Beatles’ “Hey Jude”. She’s prettiest when most vulnerable as on “Hold My Hand” and on the intimate duet with Jellick on “When The Sun Goes Out”. Confident concepts
Sinne Eeg has one of the most luminous delivery styles around, and she works it well teamed with a horn section of Kye Palmer/tp-fh, Glan Berger/wwinds, Jim Lewis/tb, Alex Budman/reeds, Dave Holben/tub along with Steve Gregory/g, Chad Edwasrds/p-key, Jonathan Pintoff/b, Randy Drake/dr, Scott Breadman/perc and Chris Gordon/p. Eeg is frisky and fun wordlessly with Lewis on “Rocket Blues” and reverent with Palmer on a dreamy “Hymn”. There’s some hip horn work on a soulful “What About Love” and fun wacka wooka guitar on “Getting Along With Love” as the horns are sweet besides Eeg on a calypso’d “Under the Stars”. Can’t sit still on this one.
Jamile is the vocalist on this 2 album recording of a concert at City College For The arts back in 2019. Backed by composer/pianist Mike Holober’s ensemble of Marvin Stamm/tp-fh, Dick Oatts/wwinds, Jason Rigby/reeds, Mark Patterson/tb, Mike McGuirk/b and Dennis Mackrel/dr, Jamle is pastoral on “A Summer Midnight’s Dream” while giving an aria on “Four-Letter Words”. She and the team are languid on “You Never Know” with the horns asserting themselves on “Kiss The Ground” and reclining with the vocalist on “Breathe Deep”. Thoughtful harmonies.
