Playing electric and nylon guitars as well as doing some “live” programming, Dan Bruce brings together a band of Chris Coles/as-ts-vocodor, Brad Wagner/ss-ts-bcl, Caleb Smith/tb, Will Wedmedyk/vib, Theron Brown/key, Aidan Plank/b, Anthony Taddeo/dr and Joel Negus/synth for a collection of originals. The band has an early Weather Reportish feel as on the synthy gallop of the title p ieces, with some fun Brazilian as the percussion percolates on “Insignificance (A Love Song)”. Smith’s warm trombone glides with Wagner’s bass clarinet on the dark “Not Knowing” and some tricky vocoder teams with electric guitar and alto sax on the coy “Slant”. Creative harmonies and textures abound, with the unique flavors always sounding logical and never forced.
