Leader Paul Messina plays a slew of saxes and flutes as well as hitting the keyboards and synthesizers with his band of Tommy Paez/g, Mike Bogle/key-tb, Mark R. Harris/b, Ignacio Nunez/per and Jaime Vila and collection of guests on this collection of accessible originals. You get a bit of a Steely Dan-ish feel on the soulful “Thursday Morning Coffee” with Paez and Messina’s tenor leading the way, while the two mellow out on the warm ballad title track. Lovely nylon strings team with Messina’s f lute on the pretty “Seven Smiles” while Nunez’s percussion percolates on the warm “Jade” and Stevie Wonderish “Red Star”. Smooth jazz grooves glide on “Above the Clouds” and “Say Yes” with hip keys and sax for “Reaching Out”. Easy on the ears.
