Cyrus Chestnut: My Father’s Hands

Pianist and worship leader Cyrus Chestnut gives a tribute to his father, a deacon in the church as well, on this strong trio album with Peter Washington/b and Lewis Nash/dr. As with all his albums, Chestnut gives a solo recitative of a gospel tune, and he shines like a light through a stained glass window on a reflective “I Must Tell Jesus”. The team gives a gospel feel with Chestnut in full fist mode on ”Nippon Soul Connection” and is glassy on a classy work around Washington on “Thinking About You”. His intro to “Baubles, Bangles and Beads” is gloriously evocative around Nash’s drums, and he’s contemplatively reflective for “But Beautiful” and luminous around Nash’s mallets on “Epilogue”.
