Hard bop with a soul is delivered by Calvin Johnson, playing soprano and tenor saxes with a crisp team of Ryan Haseler/p-key, Trenton O’Neal-Alfred Jordan-Thamas Glass/dr, Evan Washington-Peter Harris/b and various guests. On soprano he glides over the “Poinciana” inspired lilt on “Treme” while riding over the big beat provided by O’Neal on a hard hitting “Summertime”. Erica Falls brings sweet sounds to the easy R&B’d “Streetcar Love” while some rich strings blend with Johnson’s tenor on the glorious read of the anthem “Life Every Voice and Sing”. Johnson’s tenor flexes like a Saturday at Muscle Beach on the hip “I’m Walking” and bounces like a superball on the bopping “Anova”. Upbeat and uplifting.
