Kenny Shanker: Vortex

Richly toned alto saxist Kenny Shanker leads his team of Bill Mobley/tp, Daisuke Abe/g, Mike Eckroth/p, Yoshi Waki/b and Brian Fishler/dr through a mix of originals and standards on this rewarding release He also plays soprano for a tune, his deeply hued blues of “Midnight Snack”; other than that he’s bopping gracefully on the alto for the title piece and gliding over Eckroth’s rich striding hands on Dave Brubeck’s “The Duke”. Abe supplies a sleek pulse to the samba tones of “Cinnamon” while Waki introduces a deep rivulet for Shanker to glide around during the assertive “Hunter”. Most fun of all is the Tin Pan Alley take of “Lulu’s Back In Town” with Shanker and company swaggering like a bunch of Rat Packers. Delightful drops of bop
