Gerald Clayton: Bells On Sand

Diverting from his working trio, pianist/composer Gerald Clayton takes a few intriguing steps on this latest release. A mix of solos, duets and intimate small group tunes create a nocturnal atmosphere. Dad John Clayton comes in for some rich bowing with drummer Justin Brown for a somber “Water’s Edge” and the two create thoughtful impressions on “Elegia”. Portuguese vocalist MARO comes in with her sot voice for a fragile “Damunt de to Nomes les Flors” and a wispy  duet for “Just A Dream”. Employer Charles Lloyd loans his breathy tenor sax for a tender “Peace Invocation” while there’s a hip hoppy “That Roy” that breaks up the atmosphere. Clayton sneaks in a handful of solos, two takes of the standard “My Ideal”, one an inquisitive affair with warm stride reaches, and a Monkish second read, with things closing out on a reflective “There Is Music Where You’re Going My Friends”. Gloriously introspective.
