Trumpeter Darren Johnston leads a post bop ensemble of Geof Bradfield/ts-ss-bcl, Clark Sommers/b and Dana Hall/dr through ten spacious originals. The lack of a choral instrument is not missed with the leader floating well on “Asherah” and plunging deep on the Mingusy “Locomotive Sunflower”. Sommers and Hall get into a funky pulse for “The Color of the Room That Reminded Me” while snapping up some vintage New Orleans crispness for Bradfield’s celebrative soprano on “Little Gold Fish”. The team drifts like a cirrus cloud on “Intention and Commitment” while bopping the blues on “Shade”. Three or four shades of Mingus’ blues.
