BLUE GUITARS…Stew Cutler: The Blues From Another Angle (with guests Mike Stern and James Montgomery), Albert Castiglia: I Got Love

If you’re a six string’d blues breaker, just wait until you get a load of this album by ax man Ste Cutler. He plays and sings a bit with some soul, but usually employs others for the mic work. Meanwhile, he has a juke joint jumping core unit of Bill McClellan/dr, Booker King/b, Tom Wilson/key along with some other guests sitting in, most notably jazzer Mike Stern on the guitar and harmonica man James Montgomery. The latter blows a mean breeze on the rural “ Say What You Mean” with Cutler on a thick Resophonic i, while Stern sits in on the swampy boogie of “Blews”. Singer Mary Jean Cutler gets sassy on the boogie-ing “Get It While You Can” and Booker King preaches it on the shuffling “P lease Mr. VIbratin”. The team jams like its 2 am on “Night Shift” and goes tasty and mellow for “Shine Or Rain”. You’ll be pulled over for speeding if you play this while driving, so watch the gas pedal!

Rocking in the 1970s is the call of the day for guitarist/vocalist Albert Castiglia, teaming up with Lewis Stephens/B3-p, Justine Tompkins/b and Ephraim Lowell/dr for a blues rocking set of originals. Hints of Aerosmith are heard on the slithering guitar licks of “Don’t Pray With The Devil” with wicked riffs a law Foghat during “Depression Blues” and “I Got Love”. The team shows it’s boogie man on “What’s Wrong With You” and on the B3 hummer “Burning Bridges” while the team goes double time on the nasty “Double Down”. Straight from the Strat.
