Switching to a new label, guitar legend John Scofield makes a few changes in his band personnel, getting rid of everyone and going solo on this intimate collection of originals and well conceived covers and traditionals . He’s still on his electric guitar, and provides via lower strings and chords the supporting pulse for each tune.
He’s warm and patient over his own bass line on an intimate read of “Danny Boy”, while bringing in oblique colors and askance harmonies as he picks out “Trace de Jour”, going deep into the Memphis swamp with his swinging strums on “Jonco Partner”. For the standards, he gives a patient rural feel to “My Old Flame”, a gorgeous twang on Hank Williams’ “You Win Again” and adds clever effects to a thick and chunky rockabilly “Not Fade Away”. He gives some tones and delivery not unlike Bill Frisell on a plaintive “Honest I Do” and is subdued on a cozy “Mrs Scofield’s Waltz”. You can tell that many of these covers are songs that feel like part of his life, as he treats them like old friends, being comfortable yet having a fun jab here and there. Pleasant pickings!
