One of the most important modern voices (literally) on the guitar, Kurt Rosenwinkel show another side of his musicality, returning to his first instrument, the piano, on this lovely solo outing. He’s composed all of the material as well, with the 10 songs ranging from 4-6 minutes. It’s a worthwhile adventure and reveals a lot about Rosenwinkel’s approach to the guitar as well, as the songs are lyrical, warm and alluring.
There’s a confident and yet tender touch to his hands, lovely and flowing on pieces like “Love Signs”, impressionistic on “Heavenly Bodies” and “Lost Love” and classical in concept for “Music”. There’s still his rhapsodic sense of drama as on “Reassurement” while he uses space well on the pastoral “For Dad” and gives some rich textures during “The Cross”. Noirish moods are palpable on the reflective “Whispers of Love” with a parlor attitude presented on the pensive “Hommage a Mitch”. Would come to see him play these pieces on either 88 keys or 6 strings.
