John C. O’Leary III: The Sundering

If you’re looking for a solo piano master, check out this release by Mexican born, US-stationed John Clarence “O’Leary III. He’s got a rich classical tone, with digits weaned by stride and boogie woogie masters but also influenced by the likes of Keith Jarrett. The album consists mostly of solo excursions with a few duets. Of the former, he’s dramatic and modern on “Aurora” , thoughtful and deep for meditative “The Sundering” while his left hand fingers dance on the panoramic “Xenographic Barrier”. There’s an impressionistic trinkle tinkle to the pair of “Ghosts In The Desert” and a rich reflection for “The Coupling”. As far as duets, he swings hard on the two piano fist fest of “C Jam Blues” and “All The Things You Are” with Shaun Martin as well as with piano master Dick Hyman for “Samb Jelly”. Definitely want to check this guy out if he hits California on a tour.
