The recent loss of guitar legend Pat Martino created a six stringed void in the jazz world. In his honor, a wide range of fellow pickers got together to salute the iconic maestro, never trying to imitate, but simple to reflect a different color of Martino’s prismatic rainbow. For example Oz Noy and Nir Felder rock hard with Chulo Gatewood/ b and Tobias Ralph/dr on the exuberant “Joyous Lake” while Adam Rogers and Peter Bernstein give a classy blues with Dezron Douglas/b and Allan Mednard/dr on “Inside Out”. Kurt Rosenwinkel plays all of the instruments on his gentle and l yrical “Black Glass” and Fareed Haque is virtuosic for “Line Games”. Dave Stryker and Paul Bollenback dig in deep on a modal “On The Stirs” and synthy effects float around Rez Abasi with Jeff Miles on “Noshufuru”. As you’d expect, the solo outings win the day; Russell Malone’s fingers are delicate on an agonizing “Lament” and Joel Harrison is intimate on a rural “Country Road”. When’s the next volume?
