Alex “Apolo” Ayala: Bambula

Bassist Alex “Apolo” Ayala creates a richly mooded and exotic album with drummer Ivan Renta and Ivan Renta on soprano or alto sax. Journeys far and wide are travelled to, with the title piece featuring Ayala’s elastic strings supporting Renta’s alto, while the team gets somber on the darkly mooded “Las Caras Lindas”. Ayala delivers a p ulsating intro to set the tone for Anna Louise Anderson’s passionate wordless vocals on “Café’ Y Bomba Eh” while he and Renta create a tricky line on the bopping “Bozales”. Renta’s soprano is pretty on “Matriaca” and floats over the Ayala’s drone on the strummed “Agosto”. A caravan of treasures are carried here.
