Pianist Pete Malinverni gives a rich tribute to Leonard Bernstein on this classy trio album with Ugonna Okegwo/b and legendary Jeff Hamilton/dr. Malinverni has a style that has bebop pioneer Bud Powell in the marrow, as evoked on the sleek take of “New York New York” while there are dashes of Vince Guaraldi on the lyrical “It’s Love” and sleek “Some Other Time”. Hamilton is a master here, with suave brushes on the warm “Simple Song”, deft tom toms for “Cool” and guiding cymbals for the waltzing “I Feel Pretty” with Okegwo getting some nice space on Malinverni’s own “A Night On The Town” and digging a nice groove for “Lucky To Be Me” while the three create a film noir atmosphere on “Some Other Time”. Has a rocket in his pocket.
