Nick Maclean: Can You Hear Me?

For two albums, pianist Nick Maclean delivers a mix of solo piano excursions, teamed with producer Brownman Ali’s own vocal ruminations/instructions as well as vocal snippet samples on society and politics from the likes of Christopher Hitchens.

Producer Brownman Ali gives vocal instructions and introductions to a number of the pieces, bringing in some humor as well as on “Dolphin Dance” where he tells Maclean to “start like Bill Evans, and end up drunk”.  Maclean’s playing produces a rich “Variations On A Pork Pie Hat” and “Spartacus Love Theme/Nardis” where he goes on a clever digression. His take of “Blackbird/Bye Bye Blackbird” includes societal awareness, while he wears the blues well on “Why The Caged Bird Sings”. Personal, with a wish to be able to enjoy the music on its own.
