Martin Wind Quartet: My Astorian Queen

Bassist Martin Wind is the leader and foundation, but Scott Robinson is the utility man, playing tenor sax, bass sax, clarinet and even trumpet with all stars Matt Wilson/dr and Bill Mays/p on a mix of originals and standards. Wind is a genius and mixing and matching, as he does a feisty duet with Wilson on the clever “New York, New York” and featuring himself on the lyrical and penetrating title tune. On trumpet, Robinson is muted and hip over Wilson’s brushes on the easy swing of “Mean What You Say” and bel canto open for “There’s a Boat That’s Leaving Soon For New York”. Robinson plunges deep into magma on the noirish “Solitude” and sounds positively Getzian on tenor on the tasty “E Preciso Perduar”. Cozy swing is supplied by Wind on a deft “Broadway” while Mays goes uptown on the classy “Peace Waltz”. Timelessly casual.
