Blessed with a husky voice like Abbey Lincoln, and a flexibility a la Sarah Vaughan, singer Liz Terrell delivers some earthy reads of standards that grab your attention. She’s supported by a classy ensemble of Daniel Clarke/p, Chris Brydge/b, Alan Parker/g, Eddie Williams/ts and Emre Kartari/dr in a mix and match fashion. She goes toe to toe with Williams’ full bodied tenor over Brydge’s deep pulse on “People Make The World Go Round” and oozes with Clarke on a Fats Waller melody that takes you to the corners of “Jitterbug Waltz” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’”. Parker gives some Pat Methenyesque lines on the fluid “The Saga of Harrison Crabfeathers” and flows with ripples for Terrell to wade in for “Time After Time”. Most clever is the meditative rubato intro of “Night and Day” that has Terrell hover like a morning fog, and her mix of scat and lyrics to the prismatic “Blue Monk”. Would love to see her in concert and feel the heat.
