Alison Shearer: View From Above

New York based alto saxist Alison Shearer is one of the fresher sounds of the up and coming players. This recent release has her with a core team of Kevin Bernstein/p-key, Mary Kenney/b and Horace Phillips along with a handful of guests on horn, cello and vocals.

Her tone is confident and strong, with a dash of Jackie McLean on the soul-pop pieces l ike “On Awakening with Bernstein’s keys or the indie and lyrical “Celestial. Kenney provides a nice bass line for Cycles” with Miranda Joan guesting with cooing vocals on “Breathe Again”. Trumpeter Wayne Tucker adds some beef to “Three Flights Up” and a chorus teams with effects and a socially conscious speech on “Big Kids” with the team getting dreamy on “Dawn To Dusk”. A clever mix of adventure and bohemia.
