Three is not a crowd in jazz..
Pianist Steve Amirault, bassist Adrian Vedady and drummer Jim Doxas mix originals with some clever takes of jazz standards on this recent release from north of the border. The team interplay deftly on Amirault’s flowing “All Those Lovely Things” with Vedady getting some nice work out front, with Doxas bopping the brushes during his own “Wray” and on the pianist’s “Soho Dreams”. The team do a cleverly upbeat take of “My One And Only Love”, with Amirault taking a hip piano intro in full stride that slowly turns into an R&B groove on a hoot of “Take the ‘A’ Train”. The three deliver a slow and sensuous take of “Takin’ A Chance On Love” and Amirault is elegiac on his own “Empathy”. Bright ideas shining well.
