Sara Serpa: Intimate Strangers

Vocalist Sara Serpa mixes poetry, voices and lyrics together on this album that feels like a collection of modern madrigals. For her compositions, she brings in the voices of Emmanuel Iduma (who provides the spoken words), Sofie Rei, Aubrey Johnson and poem reader Onesiphore Nembe.  There are multiple layers of the human voice, creating a rich Old English feel on “First Song” with a mix of piano (Matt Mitchell) and modular synthesizer (Qasim Naqvi) creating artsy echoes and beyond on “Lokoja-Okenne” and Note to Nephew”. Iduma tells a local language story on “Kidira” with Nembe” teamed with effects for “The Poet”. Vocal experiments abound as on “Le Bout Du Mond” and the prose meeting electronics on “Lejam”. The prismatic human voice.
