Marshall Crenshaw: #447

Time is the great leveller

Back in the 1990s, Marshal Crenshaw was the “It” guy of popular rock. He had his ups and downs, and this 1999 album is a reissue of his high water mark. He sings, plays guitars, bass, drums and some keyboards along with a team that includes Brad jones/b, David Sancious/p, Greg Leisz/dobro, Bill Loyd/g, Pat Buchanan/g and Chris Carmichael/vi.

A handful of the tunes have a classy and casual jazz feel, with some Blue Note strings swinging on “ Eydie’s Tune”, “Santa Fe” and “Glad Goodbye”. Other pieces sound like outtakes from a Blind Faith or Derek and the Dominoes session, with some rural rock and blues produced on “Dime a Dozen Guy” and “You Said What??”. Some folksy acoustic strings are plucked on the rural “Glad Goodbye” and “TMD”, keeping the ambitious album well rounded. A rich palate from the past.
